Mission Trip Memories May 24, 2010

This week I have the privilege of being in Charleston, MO on a mission trip with our church.  We are getting to help remodel the Shining Light Outreach Center.   We have had a great couple of days getting to put up some walls and have a lot of laughs along the way.  Going on mission trips is one of my favorite parts of being a pastor.  I look forward to them every year and cannot wait to see what God is going to do and it is always fun getting to meet new folks and get to know our own church folks better.

Every year that we go on a mission trip it causes me to reminisce about all the things that have taken place on previous trips.   I remember the people we have met along the way, the funny stories that have taken place, and all the good times that have been shared.  Some of my favorite memories have taken place on our church mission trips.  Some of them include:

–  Listening to Gary Morris and Chris Rutledge try to outdo each other with funny stories and watching as Gary realized for the first time he had been outdone.

–  Playing wiffle ball with all the church kids in the front yard of the children’s home in Princeton, MO.

–  Meeting some great folks in Mississippi following Katrina and getting to have some AMAZING pecan pie from Miss Glo.   Also got to see for the first time a baptistry turned into a shower.

–  Spending time with Jack Richardson (a man in his 80’s) on our trip to Indonesia.  He is such a character and he kept us all laughing the entire trip.  Plus getting to see our IMB missionaries on the job was a blessing as well.

–  Preaching with an interpreter for the first time in El Salvador.

–  Playing dodgeball and basketball with folks in Kingsville, MO last year as we helped them build their new church building.

– Listening tonight to Pastor Dean lead a young man to Christ on his cell phone as we were all relaxing after a long day of work.

This list could go on and on as I think about all of our trips.  I really wish every believer would take the opportunity to go on a mission trip and experience all that God is doing around the world.  It truly is amazing!
