Roasting Coffee October 22, 2008

Here is some coffee growing in El Salvador.  While in El Salvador some of the members of the church took us on a tour of one of their coffee plantations.  Just about every member of the church owns or works for a coffee plantation.  The view from the top of one of the hills was beautiful.

One of the gifts the church gave to each of us was coffee beans.  So since I been home I been learning how to roast my own coffee beans.  It has been fun, when the beans are just about done they start popping like popcorn.

The coffee is delicious.  I was expecting the coffee to be very strong, however I could not have been more wrong.  The coffee is mild and has a really nice taste to it.  So feel free to stop on by the cave anytime and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Jogging in the Moonlight August 7, 2008

Last night after church I decided to go for a jog and so I headed off to the track.    I have added a new element to my jogging.  I purchased a cheap little clip-on Coby MP3 player so that I can listen to some music while I jog.  I have found that it helps distract me from the pain 🙂

So I get the music going and I start off jogging.  One of the first songs that came on was Mercy Me’s “Word of God Speak.”  Just about the time this song came on, the moon crept out from behind the clouds and looked amazing.  It was so brilliant that I just had to stop and reflect on the words of King David in Psalm 19 “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.  Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.”

David sure was right! Word of God speak . . .

Every year that one of my girls starts Kindergarten I take them to Six Flags and spend the day having fun riding roller coasters and playing.  Yesterday was the day for my third daughter McKenna.  We had a great time with each other.  Here are some pictures of our favorite rides.

I Have Been Memed?!?! June 26, 2008

Thanks to my good friend Bret over at The Capranica I have been memed. When I first read it I had no clue what it meant. But from what I understand it is like a blogosphere game of tag.

Here is the meme:

In an effort to keep it simple, short, and easy to follow, I’d like to challenge you to quote one verse (not one chapter). And then say what the Lord has been teaching you in one sentence (not one paragraph). Then tag 5 peeps (you know the drill).

Here is my answer:

Hebrews 12:1 “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside the sin which so easily entangles us and let us run with endurance the face that is set before us”

Run with a focus on endurance in this life.

Now I will tag the following people and challenge them with the same meme:

– Bob Aubuchon at Random Words

– Matt Perry at Treasure the Word

– Micah Fries at Friesville

– Tom Bryant at The View from Osprey

– Jesse at Acts 64

Have fun!

Happy Birthday Mom! June 13, 2008

Today would have been my Mom’s 77th birthday.  She died in 2003 from some lung problems she battled for several years.  I miss my Mom a lot. There is not a day that goes by that I do not think about her and realize just what a big impact she had on my life.

I was what most people would call a Mama’s boy, especially growing up.   When I was little my father worked shift work and was gone a lot.  During that time my Mom and I did all kinds of things together.  She would play wiffle ball with me, play in the sandbox, and do just about anything I wanted to do.

This picture was taken at my high school graduation in 1994.  It was one of the happiest moments that I can remember for my Mom.  It makes me sad to know that she did not get to share in my seminary graduations because I know how happy she would have been.

My Mom taught me many things about life.  One of the most important things she impressed upon me was the importance of a strong spiritual life.  Every morning she would get up and spend time in prayer and bible study.  Every day she would also write in a prayer journal.  I have all her prayer journals in my office and I love to look through them and read the different prayers that she prayed for me, her family, her friends and her church.  When I was very young my Mom and I memorized the Lord’s Prayer and the 23rd Psalm and we would recite them together every morning.  Sadly there was times when I was younger that I thought this practice was a little dumb, but looking back I am extremely thankful that she lead us to do that.

My Mom was a very social person.  She never met a stranger and would talk to anyone at any time about anything. This was a part of her personality that was very frustrating to me at times growing up, but looking back I can see how I developed some of this part of her personality as well and how it has helped me in my calling as a pastor.

I have several favorite memories of my Mom, but some of the most special ones come from our yearly family vacations to fish at Lake Freeman in Monticello, Indiana.  Every June for 2 weeks we would head to the lake and stay in a cabin.  Now to better understand this, you would have to know that my mom did not like the outdoors.  She did not fish.  She did not swim.  Yet she loved these family vacations.  While my Dad and I would spend the majority of our time fishing, she would stay in the cabin and cook and work word puzzles and just relax.  Just about every morning on those vacations my Mom and I would have breakfast together and then play a Dukes of Hazzard card game that we always brought with us.  While playing cards we would always listen to a local talk show on the country radio station.  This may not seem like much to most of you, but they were very special times for me.

Happy Birthday Day Mom!  I miss you dearly and I praise God every day for the impact you had and continue to have on my life.  I pray that I can have the same impact on my daughters.  To all the Cave Dwellers out there, take time today to tell your Mom how special she is and how much you love her.

I was given a list of things my mother taught me.  I thought I would share a few of them here:

–  My mother taught me to appreciate a job well done.  “If you are going to kill each other, do it outside, I just finished cleaning.”

–  My mother taught me religion. “You better pray that comes out of the carpet.”

–  My mother taught me logic.  “Because I said so, that’s why.”

–  My mother taught me more logic. “If you fall out of that swing and break your neck, you are not going to the store with me.”

–  My mother taught me about stamina.  “You sit there until all that spinach is gone.”

–  My mother taught me about irony. “Keep crying, and I will give you something to cry about.”

– My mother taught me about humor. “When the lawn mower cuts off your toes, don’t come running to me.”

– My mother taught me genetics.  “You are just like your father.”

– My mother taught me wisdom. “When you get to be my age, you’ll understand.”

–  My mother taught me justice. “One day you will have kids, and I hope they turn out just like you.”

Tony Dungy: Quiet Strength April 27, 2008

I just recently finished reading Quiet Strength. It is the life story of Tony Dungy. Tony is the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. However, more importantly Tony is a devout follower of Jesus Christ. If you are looking for a good book to read I would highly recommend it.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book:

This book is not only about me, either. It’s about the priorities, choices, approaches, and habits that lead to being a winner, to experiencing true success. It’s about you and me and our journey in this world together. It’s about the things I’ve learned, the mistakes I’ve made, and the heartaches that have made me lean into the Father’s presence. I hope that when its all said and done, you’ll see that it’s really all about Him. (Pg. xvi)

It was the first time I was able to look at football as something that God was allowing me to do, not something that should define me. I couldn’t take my identity from this sport; I had to consciously make sure that God was in first place. (Pg. 51)

I had once again learned a valuable lesson. God’s plan don’t always follow human logic. . . We often can’t see what God is doing in our lives, but God sees the whole pictures and His plan for us clearly. (Pg. 94)

My purpose in life is simply to glorify God. We have to be careful that we don’t let the pursuit of our life’s goals, no matter how important they may seem, cause us to lose sight of our purpose. I coach football. But all the good I can do to glorify God along the way is my real purpose. I want to help people see the path to eternal life through Christ, to enjoy an abundant life now, and to fulfill their God-given purposes here. (Pg. 301)

Today is my 2nd daughter Mackenzie’s 6th birthday.  It is hard to imagine that she is 6 years old as it seems just like yesterday I was at the hospital holding her in my arms for the first time.  Here is a picture of her with her favorite thing in the world, her animal blanket.  She does not go anywhere without it.

Happy Birthday Kenzie!
